Zion Episcopal is grateful to the Greater Irvington Land Trust for their award of a $500 grant to install a new native plant garden on the Church’s ground adjacent to the Old Croton Aqueduct.
According to the Grounds Committee: “This GILT grant has further inspired us to commit to an all-native plant landscape; we will be installing black cohosh plants near the bus stop parking lot on Oak Street which should lend an unexpected surprise to those who peer into that shady patch of land.”
“But what’s most exciting is the installation of a ‘mini-forest’, utilizing the planting techniques of the Miyawaki Method: planting diverse species very close together, which fosters an increased sense of competition, resulting in growth rates 50 times the rate of trees that are spread out.”
The understory shall be composed of bottle-brush buckeye, elderberry, and smooth sumac, while the canopy shall offer black cherry, red oak, red spruce, and pignut hickory their shot at the sky.
